What are some good brands and features that i should be shopping for? Hoping to spend between 500-900 dollars only. Please help

If you are going to have Vista on it, make sure you have at LEAST 2 GB of ram. Intel Core2 duo will be faster than AMD athlon/turion. Core2 will also have better battery life and run cooler…
Lenovo will cost a little more, but have better keyboard and be a little more rugged than most others.
Smaller/lighter will cost more for the same performance. netbooks (those little 10 inch screen pc’s that are cute, small, light, have very SLOW processors… Intel ATOM processors are most defintiely NOT in the same class as a Core2 or even an AMD processor… do NOT think that the “speed” of a CPU (Ghz) has ANY reflection on the actual speed of the computer!
Intel wireless network cards in a machine are generally more reliable and better performing than atheros cards.
